25 & 26 - Blood Typing and Transfusions Flashcards
H substance
protein acted on by ABO gene products to make A and B antigens (O makes a serum protein w/ no known fn/activity)
what antibodies do type O people have?
Anti-A (IgM), Anti-B (IgM), Anti-A,B (IgG - can cross placenta!)
front and back typing for ABO groups
front - determine Ags on RBCs
back - determine Abs in serum
main Rh antigen
D
how much blood is donated at a time?
450 ml ish + 30 ml for testing
what is the shelf life of RBCs in additive solution 1?
42 d
how much will a unit of RBCs inc Hgb and Hct in adult?
1 g/dL and 2-3%
Hbg threshold for transfusing RBCs (nl and heart/lung dz)
nl - 7-8 g/dL
heart/lung dz - 10 g/dL
function of FFP
replenish coag factors - NOT volume expansion
ex: TTP, warfarin OD
how much will one unit of platelets inc ct?
5,000/uL
are platelet transfusions indicated for ITP, TTP, or HIT?
no (except in ITP if there is significant bleeding)
what is cryoprecipitate and what is it used for?
thaw FFP and collect precip (fibrinogen, F.VIII, F.XIII, vWF, fibronectin)
used for low fibrinogen. can also be source of vWF and F.XIII
criteria for Rh neg people RBC transfusions
Rh neg female of childbearing age = always Rh neg
Rh neg people >50 yo = can have Rh pos
Rh pos people - doesnt matter
*also applies to platelets!!
