24.8 cyclic and aromatic hydrocarbons Flashcards
Cyclic hydrocarbons
Compounds that contain a hydrocarbon ring (ends connect to make a ring)
In the regular ‘anes’ with a ring arrangement are called cycloalkanes will put ‘cyclo’ in the beginning ie cyclopentane cyclooctane
Aliphatic compounds
Any hydrocarbon compound that does not have rings
arene
A special group of unsaturated cyclic hydrocarbons that benzene is a form of.
aromatic compound
a hydrocarbon compound that has a carbon ring and only one hydrogen attached to each. The other bonds are carbon-carbon. Benzene is an aromatic compound with 6 carbons (cyclohexene)
resonance
a term used to describe when a molecule has more than one valid drawable structure.
These molecules are more stable than similar molecules without resonance.
To describe resonance, one may draw an inscribed circle.
Benzene naming
Benzene can have branches like any other hydrocarbon, in which case you treat it normally; methylbenzene ethylbenzene. If the benzene is a branch itself however, the prefix Phenyl is used; 3-phenylhexane
disubstituted benzenes
When benzenes have more than one branch, one starts the address with the first branch. There is no actual beginning or end to a carbon ring. 1,3-dimethylbenzene has one space between the two branches.
cracking
a controlled process by which hydrocarbons are broken down or rearranged into smaller, more useful molecules. This is to obtain useful fuels such as gasoline.
