2.4 - Wave Cut Platforms and Cave/arch/stack/stump Flashcards
How is a cave formed?
Headland makes waves refract so energy is concentrated around it
Erosional processes like hydraulic action target weak points on both sides
Cave is formed when weak area cracks and breaks to form a whole which only widens
How does an arch form?
Holes in both sides form a cave which continued to get eroded so they meet and form an arch
How does a stack form?
Top of arch is u supported and collapses leaving a stack
How does a stump form?
Destructive waves erode the base and cut into the stack
Becomes unstable and collapses to leave just the base
How is a wave cut platform made?
Destructive waves attack the cliff base so it erodes forming a curved wave-cut notch along the length of the cliff
Rock above becomes unsupported and collapses due to gravity
What happens after the unsupported collapses in wave-cut platform formation?
Cliff line retreats
Shore platform left behind and also is vulnerable to weathering
Rock pools may be left if they’re more resistant
