2.2 - Geological Structure Influence Flashcards
1
Q
When are joints formed?
A
Sedimentary: as sedimentary rock forms under pressure
Igneous/metamorphic: when they cool
2
Q
How can a seaward dip be recognised?
A
If the bottom part of the cliff sticks out to sea
3
Q
How can a landward dip be recognised?
A
If the top is overhanging and sticking out to sea
4
Q
What type of cliffs do seaward dips produce?
A
Gentler but less stable once’s
Loose material can slide down bedding planes due to gravity in mass movement and bedding planes tilted towards the sea
5
Q
What type of cliffs do landward dip beds produce?
A
Stable and steeper ones
Less mass movement as slopes of bedding plane are towards the land not the sea
Weathering and erosion may attack bedding planes and joints
