2.1 - Rock Types and Erosion Flashcards
What are I genius rocks?
Crystalline rocks which have interlocking crystals that make it strong and resistant to erosion
Often have few joints
Erode very slowly
Examples of igneous rock?
Granite
Basalt
What is metamorphic rock?
Rock that’s been modified by extreme heat and pressure and has many folds and decompressed layers so has many fractures
Erodes slowly
Examples of metamorphic rock are
Marble
Slate
What is sedimentary rock?
Clastic rock formed by compressed skeletons and shells of dead and decayed organisms and contain many fractures
Erodes very quickly
Examples of sedimentary rock sre
Limestone
Chalk
Shale
What is columnar jointing?
Lava contracting as it cools forms cracks which grow downwards to form columns
In basalt mainly
Difference between intrusive and extrusive rock
Extrusive has hot magma cooled on top of the rock - fine crystals
Instructive has magma cooled underground - large crystals
