2.10 - Human/Physical Factors and Recession (Guinea) Flashcards
State physical factors which affect Guinea’s recession
SLR due to climate change
Swell waves
State three human factors which affect Guinea’s recession
Diamond mining
Sand extraction
Coastal management/dredging
How do SLR affect Guinea?
Risen 10cm since 1950 leading to more destructive waves, erosional processes and so erosion also stronger backwash
Why are mangrove forests being cut down?
Used as fuel for household needs
Effect of diamond mining?
Gravel is extracted from rivers but it isn’t returned
Means that there’s less sediment transported to the coastline and less to absorb wave energy
Why is mangrove deforestation bad?
Height/energy of waves can’t be reduced and soil is washed away as there are no root systems to bind soil
How do swell waves affect Guinea?
Swell waves reach 3m during monsoon (Aug to Oct) leading to $3.8m damage and unemployment (farmland)
How do strong waves have an effect?
Break on soft cliff material so more is eroded as less resistant rock
