2.4 Stages of design process Flashcards
What’s the aim of a design process?
To create new and original designs
Is the process circular or linear? and why?
Circular (iterative) process
- as further research and modifications will be carried out as many times as necessary to produce a successful design
Designers will carry out different kinds of investigations depending on: (think of NEA)
- context of the design
- needs of target market
- forecasted trends
- need to consult with specialists
- an assessment of existing products
Research gathered will depend on the context and may include:
- design features of former products
- moodboards to inspire a certain feeling or aesthetic
- the work of other designers
Would should moodboard consists of?
(3 main things)
- inspiring images that will generate ideas
- Sketches
- fabric samples - to evoke design theme
How can design ideas be generated? (think of NEA-development)
- making quick sketches
- making more detailed drawing (by hand or computer)
experimenting with fabric swatches, colours and textures - sampling different techniques
- trying out potential materials
- making 3D models out of paper, fabric or using CAD
What is modelling?
The development of a 3D shape, proportion and scale using paper, calico or computer software
What is modelling used for?
- Used to test out ideas and firm up decisions about design ideas
- Designers may also use materials that perform in a similar way to the final product.
Why is evaluation necessary?
Finds the strengths and weaknesses of a design and allows for third-party opinions from clients, suppliers, experts and consumers.
- their unbiased views help design teams to judge the best aspects of the design
