2.4 - BIOMES Flashcards
What is a biome?
a community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat
Microbiota vs Microbiome
Microbiota - a community of microorganisms found in multicellular organisms
Microbiome - all the genetic material within a microbiota
(La verdad no entiendo esto pero no creo que nos pregunten)
What is a biome shift?
A change in temperature and precipitation lead to climate change and a change in biomes (e.g. less precipitation –> desert gets larger)
What is zonation?
A biome change over space
What is succession?
A biome change over time
Primary succession vs secondary succession
PS: Ecosystems are formed from bare rock (no soil)
- Pioneer species –> plant growth –> new species arrive needing soil –> new species alter environment
SS: used to be an ecosystem, suffered destruction
- same changes but much faster

What are R-Strategists?
Pioneer species: first species in a biome, “colonizers”. Highly adaptable, early reproduction, small size and short life but many offspring. Usually prey.
