What is an EVS?
Environmental value system: particular worldview that shapes the way individuals evaluate environmental issues.
What are the inputs and outputs of EVS?
Inputs: education, cultural influences, religion, media.
Outputs: decisions and perspectives
Define ecocentrism
Nature centered:
They view nature as more valuable than humans, and their objective is to protect it.
Define anthropocentrism
People centered:
Place humans as central species but avoid taking an excessive advantage of the world’s resources.
Define technocentrism
People based:
Believe that technology and human intelligence will manage to control the environment. They are very optimistic.
History of the environmental movement
Chernobyl disaster (1986), Silent Spring (1962), Deepwater Horizon oil spill (2010), Fukushima nuclear accident (2011) have motivated to develop their own EVS’s.
