Q

What does each intermolecular force apply to?

A

London Dispersion can apply to polar or nonpolar molecules, dipole - dipole applies to polar and hydrogen applies to polar if it has O-H, N-H, F-H. Polar always has dipole - dipole and London dispersion. Non-polar will only ever have London dispersion.

Q

What is required for a polar molecule to occur?

A

Must have a polar covalent bond, asymmetrical ends. Dipoles going in the same direction.

Q

What does hydrophobic and hydrophilic mean and what molecules can be hydrophobic or philic?

A

Hydrophobic means that the molecule does not mix well with water and hydrophilic means that the molecule does mix well with water. Non-polar is always hydrophobic. Polar is often, but not always, hydrophilic. If the polar molecule has a hydrogen bond then it is hydrophilic.
