2.3a Thermodynamics (Lvl 2) Flashcards
What does thermodynamics study?
The effects of change in temperature, pressure and volume.
What is temperature?
A measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a system.
What is the difference between temperature and heat?
Temperature = a property of a body, thermal equilibrium. Heat = energy flow to or from a body due to temperature difference
What are the 3 types of thermometers?
- Bulb thermometer
- Bimetallic thermometer
- Thermistor.
What is a bulb thermometer?
Contain mercury or some other fluid with a linear rate of expansion with rising temperature.
What is a bimetallic thermometer?
Device where 2 strips of metal, from different materials, show temperature as a mechanical displacement.
Why do bimetallic thermometers work?
Because they rely on the different materials to expand at different rates are temperature increases.
What is a thermistor?
A device to measure temperature due to changes in electrical resistance with changes in temperature.
What are the 3 most common temperature scales?
- Celsius
- Fahrenheit
- Kelvin
How do you convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?
C = 5/9 (F-32).
How do you convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
F = 9/5 * C+32
What is the SI unit for temperature?
Kelvin.
What is 0 kelvin in Celsius?
-273.15 degrees C.
What is heat?
A measure of energy transferred from one part of a substance to another, or from one body to another, due to difference in temperature.
What is another unit for heat energy?
Calorie (Cal).
