What was the process of making pottery?
- Basic shape made on a potter’s wheel with patterns then applied
- Iron rich slip (mix of water and clay to give decoration to pottery) was then added
- Became various shades of red or black depending on the temp of the kiln
What was the largest type of Mycenaean storage vessel and what would it usually be used for ?
Pithoi- around 1.5m high and weighed over 2 tonnes when filled
- usually contain liquid or food and could be buried to keep the contents cooled
What was a similar storage vessel to Pithoi but how did it differ ?
Amphorae
Much smaller and much narrower neck
Often elaborately painted with geometric patterns or images from nature
What was a common style of decoration ( for amphorae but also other pottery)?
Marine and plant life or a geometric pattern
Neck and the lower parts of amphora usually painted
The neck and lower part of the vessels were painted in lines or a solid block with a focus on a detailed image in the centre
What was the most common type of vessel in Mycenaean times and what might it of been used for ?
The stirrup jar ! ( looks like a tee pot with a funky handle )
Getting it’s name from the handle which resembles a stirrup on a horse.
- used to store oil or wine
- decorated with a common type of precise geometric pattern
How did designs and patterns change throughout the Mycenaean period ?
Early Mycenaean age tended to be things like
- double axes
- spirals and leaves
But as tastes changed scenes could include
- chariot racing
- bull like figures
- human figures
What are some other types of storage vessels ?
-Large Kraters for mixing water and wine
- squat three handles jars made from alabaster
- miniature vases for perfume
What was a Kylix?
A long stemmed small cup with two handles
What where gold vessels usually decorated and where have some been found?
Beautiful swirls
Found at grave circle A Mycenae and two cups at Vapheo
What are rhyta and what might they off been used for ?
Made out of pottery and/or metal they where roughly coned shaped sometimes takin the form of animal heads- a type of storage vessel
Usually contained wine or some form of liquid

Found- grave circle IV Mycenae
Materials- gold/ sheets of gold that where hammered into shape (good craftsmen ship)
Purpose- pouring wine
Techniques- hammering, granulation and Repousse
Significance- shows techniques in metal working
