How did the Greeks trade? Why was it important?
Greece traded mainly by sea
Essential for the growth and survival of societies as Greece is not rich in minerals
How did merchants exchange goods
Battering (in which if a merchant wanted a type of item or service he would offer something he already had) rather then solid money
- no evidence of money existing at the time
Where could gold come from
Macedonia, Egypt, Thasos (Greek island)
Where could ivory come from?
Africa and Syria
Where could copper come from
Attica, Syria and Cyprus
Where could silver come from
Attica ( area around Athens)
What was the main export of Mycenae
Pottery with examples being found in Syria and Israel
- usually containing olive oil
Large mixing bowls for wine called Kratos ( warrior vase is an example)
Why is the type of metal important to status?
Some metals where imported in small quantities which raised there value
Which means if it’s gold it connotes status and luxury
Copper is very important as it could manufacture bronze
Did Mycenaean cities develop strong trade links ?
Yes
Why was travel often not by land ?
- Mountains being hard to cross and slow to cross
- Bandits being a problem
- Roads were primative and basic
- Little could be carried by animals and chariots compared to boats
Are Mycenaean cities in a good location for trade ?
Yes
Many are a few miles from the sea and have sheltered harbour so it was easier to import and export goods this way
Could Mycenaeans use the sea all year round ?
No, trips took very long and it was only safe to trace half of the year from early spring to early autumn
How did ships travel ?
A method called island hopping
They could drop off and pick up supplies and goods on the way
