Q

Positive of HDI

A
  • Gives a measure of social wellbeing and quality of life rather than an economic measure
  • Clearer picture of development as it is a composite indicator
  • Good summary of the key dimensions of human development
  • Can be used to question government policy choices and priorities
17
Q

GNI Negatives

A
  • Not all countries collect datwa regularly or accurately (reliability)
  • Doesn’t indicate social wellbeing or quality of life
  • Looks at wealth but not how it is spent
  • Some economic activity is not recorded (substinence farming and barter activity)
  • Some economic work carried out illegally (eg. drug dealing, cash in hand)
  • Non-paid work is not considered but constributes to welfare (charity work, housework etc.)
