2.3 Study Guide Flashcards
What are characteristics of r-selections?
They have more offspring and put less effort and energy into each one because they’re taking care of all of them, they’re usually smaller and have shorter lifespans, they usually have early independence.
What are characteristics of K-selections?
They usually have very little offspring and put more effort and energy into them, they’re usually larger and have longer lifespans, they usually have later independence, but live in a more competitive place.
Please explain the basic structure of a survivorship curve.
The number of individuals of the population is on the y-axis, and the age is on the x-axis.
What is a type l curve?
A type l curve represents a population who tends to survive to elderly age. They usually have a smaller number of offspring.
What is a type ll curve?
This type is independent of an individual’s age. It shows a constant morality rate for the species throughout their lives.
What is a type lll curve?
This type represents a population that has a high death rate during young age, but low death rate for those that make it into middle and old age.
Are frogs more r-selected or K-selected?
r-selected. They have more offspring.
Are bison more r-selected or K-selected?
K-selected. They have less offspring.
Which survivorship type would fit frogs? Please explain why.
Type lll. They have multiple offspring but do not invest care into them.
Which survivorship type would fit bison? Please explain why.
