2.3 Reproduction Flashcards
What is the difference between cells and gametes?
Cells are diploid and gametes are haploid.
What does diploid and haploid mean?
A diploid cell is a cell that has the full 2 sets of chromosomes.
Haploid has half the number of chromosomes.
What is the male gamete and where is it produced?
The male gamete is sperm which has a head and tail section and is produced in the testes.
What is the female gamete and where is it produced?
The female gamete it the egg, which is larger than the sperm cell, has a large storage of food in its cytoplasm and is produced in the ovaries.
What is the male gamete in plants and where is it produced?
The male gamete in plants is pollen and it is produced in the anthers.
What is the female gamete in plants and where is it produced?
The female gamete in plants is the ovule and it’s produced in the ovary.
Describe the process of fertilisation as the fusion of the 2 haploid gamete nuclei to produce a diploid zygote, which divides to form an embryo.
Fertilisation is the fusion of the nuclei of the two haploid gametes to produce a diploid zygote, which divides to form an embryo. The zygote is a diploid cell because it receives one set of chromosomes from the female gamete and one set of chromosomes from the male gamete.
