2.2 Control And Communication Flashcards
Describe the structure and function of the cerebrum
The cerebrum is the large folded area of the brain and is responsible for conscious thoughts, reasoning, memory and emotions
Describe the structure and function of the cerebellum
The cerebellum is found at the rear of the brain below the cerebrum and controls balance and muscle coordination
Describe the structure and function of the medulla
The medulla is found at the top of the spinal cord and controls involuntary processes such as heart rate, breathing rate and digestion
What does the nervous system consist of?
The nervous system consists of the central nervous system (CNS) and other nerves
What is the CNS made up of?
The CNS is made up of the brain and the spinal cord
What is a neuron
A neuron is a cell in the nervous system
What does electrical impulses do
Electrical impulses carry messages along neurons
What are the 3 types of neurons
The 3 types of neurons are sensory, inter and motor
What do receptors detect
Receptors detect sensory input/stimuli
What is a synapses
A synapse is the gap between two neurons
Describe how do chemicals transfer electrical impulses between neurons at synapses
Chemicals diffuse across the synapse and bind to the receptors on the next neurone in the pathway
Describe the structure and function of the reflex arc
Reflex actions protect the body from harm by allowing it to react quickly to stimuli, such as high temperatures, helping to prevent from further damage
What are hormones
Hormones are chemical messengers
What endrocrine glands release
Endocrine glands release hormones into the bloodstream where they travel to target tissues
What do target tissues have
Target tissues have cells with complementary receptor proteins for specific hormones, so only that tissue will be affected by these hormones
