2.3 Reproduction Flashcards
What is sexual reproduction?
It is the production of offspring through the combination of genetic information
What is fertilisation?
It is the fusion of the nuclei of the gametes of an organism
What are the events that lead to fertilisation in humans?
- the production of sperm in the testes
- which is deposited in the vagina by the penis
- the sperm will swim towards the oviduct, where it will meet an egg
- and their nuclei can fuse
What is the definition of the term haploid?
A cell which contains one set of chromosomes
What diploid cell is formed as a result of fertilisation?
A zygote
What are the events that lead to fertilisation in flowering plants?
- pollen is produced by the anther
- which is transmitted to the stigma
- pollen nuclei travels towards the ovary (in a pollen tube)
- where it meets the ovule which was produced in the ovary
- their nuclei can fuse
Where is the sperm made?
In the testes
Where is the egg made?
In the ovaries/in an ovary
