2.1 Producing New Cells Flashcards
What does diploid mean?
A cell that contains 2 copies of each chromosome
What happens to chromosomes at the start of mitosis?
They shorten and become visible and they duplicate to become a pair of chromatids
What are two types of stem cell?
- Embryos
- Bone Marrow
What are stem cells involved in?
- Growth and Repair
Why is it important that the chromosomes complement is maintained during mitosis?
(Stays the same during mitosis?)
Important to be maintained so that no genetic information is lost
Why do unicelular organisms requiere cells to divide?
- To reproduce
Why do multicelular organisms requiere cells to divide?
For Growth and Repair
What are stem cells able to do?
- replícate themselves
What are stem cells?
Stem cells are unspecialised, but can specialise into specialised cells
What does haploid mean?
A cell that contains x1 copy of each chromosome e.g. sex cell
What is mean by a chromosome complement?
The number of chromosomes in the nucleus of each cell
Where are chromosomes located in an animal cell?
The Nucleus
What is the definition of a system?
A collection of organs which are working together
What is the definition of organ?
A collection of tissues which are working together
What is the definition of tissue?
A collection of cells which are working together
