2.3 reproduction Flashcards
i can describe the gametes in an animal (male)
speed (male) sperm have a head and tail they are designed to swim towards the egg. the head is torpedo shaped to make it streamlined and the first part of the tail is packed with micochonfria to provide energy for aerobic respiration for the sperm to swim
everything you know abou female eggs
females have egg gametes they are much larger than mens (500x) they contain a food store in the cytoplasm to provide energy for the process of mitosis if fertilisation occurs
sites of gamete production
sperm - testes
egg- ovaries
definition of fertilisation
the fusion of the male gamete/ sperm nucleus with the female gamete/ egg nucleus to form a fertilised egg/zygote
haploid
single set of chromosomes (egg and sperm) n=23
diploid
double set of chromosomes
zygote made by mitosis
2n=46
gamete in plants
male - pollen
female- ovule
site of gamete production in plants
male gametes are produced in the anthers of the stamen
female gametes are produced in the ovary
