2.3 Nucleic Acids Flashcards
1
Q
What is the structure of DNA?
A
• DNA consists of two polynucleotide strands
• The sugar phosphate backbone on the outside with the nitrogenous bases in the centre
• The bases of the one strand are complimentary to the bases on the other strand
2
Q
What bond holds the two polynucleotide strands together?
A
Hydrogen bonds
3
Q
What are the four bases, and which to they pair with?
A
• Guanine pairs with cytosine
• Adenine pairs with thymine
4
Q
What are the purine bases?
A
Guanine and adenine
(Double ring)
5
Q
What are the pyrimidines?
A
Thymine and cytosine
(single ring)
