2.3 DS: Infection and immunity Flashcards
What does ELISA stand for?
Enzyme linked immunosornebent Assay
ELISA can be used to detect either:
– ANTIGEN: infectious organism
– ANTIBODY: immune response to infection
ELISA: If testing early in the course of infection:
– Test for organism (ANTIGEN) at site of infection
– Antibody production will still be in the LAG phase
ELISA: If testing > 5d post-exposure
– Test for antibody in serum (LOG phase)
– Re-test 2-3 weeks later (PLATEAU phase)
Sandwich ELISA method used for
Detection of antigen
ELISA method for detection of
Antibody In serum
Haemolytic bacteria
- produce a toxin that damages cells
What is Hemolytic bacteria tested on?
We can test for this by culture on sheep blood agar
- hawmolysis occurs in the petri dsh
Antibody titre
- Titration of serum to become more and more dilute
- The greatest dilution that still gives a positive result in the test
Bacteria just need
food and a warm place to grow – Nutrient Agar at 37 degrees Celsius
What do viruses need in order to replicate?
Cells- Need to culture cells in the lab that the virus is able to infect (NB species specificity and tissue tropism of the virus)
