2.3 Culturing Microorganisms Flashcards
What is a liquid media?
solution of beef extract, peptone, yeast extract, and/or other nutrient material
What is a semisolid media?
liquid media containing 0.5% agar; used to determine motility of bacterial species
What is a solid media?
nutrient material with 1.5% or higher of agar
What is a complex media?
contain some ingredients of unknown composition and/or concentration
What is a chemically defined media?
all compounds and their concentrations are known
What is a supportive (general purpose) media?
a mixture of nutrients that will support the growth of most microbes
What is a enrichment media?
supplemented by blood or other special nutrients
What is Selective media?
favor the growth of some and inhibit growth of others
What is differential media?
cause an observable change that distinguishes between different types of microbes
What is FISHing
Sequences can be used to produce fluorescent probes that will bind to complementary DNA (fluorescent in situ hybridization or FISH).
