What happens every 10 years in the US?
A census.
Who is responsible for gathering information about the census?
State legislators. They rather their boundaries on districts every 10 years.
How are seats in Congress apportioned?
Through the census
What is gerrymandering?
When state legislators try to do this, it unfairly favors their political party when drawing their districts.
What are the requirements when drawing district boundaries?
Must have approximately the same amount of people in each district, and districts must be as similar in shape and size as possible. (700,000/1 congressmen)
What are the benefits that congressman receive?
they are free from civil arrest while Congress is in session, they can’t be served for anything they say on the floor of Congress, mayle Franken privilege/free postage!, Free office space, stationary, healthcare, gym, access, travel from/to DC.
What is an incumbent?
A current person that holds office or a certain position.
What are the benefits for incumbents?
It’s easier for them to campaign funds, represents districts are often gerrymander in their favor, increase name, recognition, job experience helps them get things done for constituents – franking privilege, casework.
What is casework?
Using position and staff to solve problems for voters and constituency
Why can political parties cause tension and conflict in Congress?
Partisanship
What does the president do as chief legislator?
Works with congress to pass laws. Works with “legislative liaisons” to influence members of congress.
What is a constituent?
People who live and vote in a government official state/district. Representatives and senators have to be mindful of constituent views and may mean going against party leaders wishes.
Interest groups- how do they work with legislators?
Legislators are always lobbied by interest groups to support their view on an issue. Through PACs, they donate to legislator campaigns and give them some influence and persuading the government.
