2.2.7 Lipids and Ester Bonds Flashcards
1
Q
What is a lipid?
A
Lipids are macromolecules that contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms.
2
Q
How do we test for lipids?
A
We use the emulsion test. Add a food sample to a test tube. Then, add ethanol to the same test tube and shake. Pour the solution into a clean test tube and observe the results. If lipids are present, a milky emulsion will occur.
3
Q
Give the main 2 properties of lipids.
A
They are HYDROPHOBIC. (insoluble in water) and NON-POLAR (an uncharged molecule due to the equal balance in electrons).
4
Q
Give the 2 groups of lipids we need to know at A Level.
A
Tryglycerides and Phopholipids.
5
Q
- Give two properties of tryglycerides.
2.Give the 2 comonents they are made up of.
A
- They are NON-POLAR and HYDROPHOBIC.
- 1 molecule of GLYCEROL and 3 molecules of FATTY ACIDS.
6
Q
What is the shortened chemical formula for fatty acids?
A
RCOOH
