2.24 - Non-Polar and Polar Molecules Flashcards
What is a dipole?
A separation of charge
What causes charge to become separated?
The difference in electronegativities of the two atoms involed in the bond
What does the overall dipole of a molecule depend on?
Its shape
If the individual dipoles cancel each other out, what is the molecule?
Non-polar
If the individual dipoles reinforce each other, what is the molecule?
Polar
What is a polar molecule?
A molecule that has an overall charge seperation
Is carbon dioxide polar or non-polar?
Non-polar
Why?
Because both C=O bonds are polar, but they are at 180 degrees to each other, so the dipoles cancel out
Is water polar or non-polar?
Polar
Why?
Because both O-H bonds are polar, and act in the same general direction, so they reinforce each other, making the compound polar
