2.21 - Bonding in Discrete Molecules Flashcards
What is a discrete molecule?
An electrically neutral group of 2 or more atoms held together by chemical bond
What term is interchangeable with ‘discrete’?
Simple
How can covalent and polar covalent bonding be shown in discrete molecules?
By dot and cross diagrams
How is a covalent bond shown in a dot and cross diagram?
By a pair of electrons in the area where the two atoms overlap
What is the octet rule?
That each atom in a compound must have 8 electrons in order for it to be stable
Does this apply to dot and cross diagrams?
No
Why?
Because in compounds such as sulfur hexafluoride, the central atom would have 12 electrons, which goes against this octet rule
