2.2.4 Coronary Heart Disease Flashcards
Coronary heart disease
When the coronary arteries supplying blood to the heart muscle become narrow
Causes of coronary heart disease
Smoking
High cholesterol
Blocked artery
Get narrow with age
Health problems causes by coronary heart disease
Heart attack
Stoke
Pain (angina) cause by lack of oxygen
Consequences to the heart by coronary heart disease
Cells can’t respire properly
Not enough enough oxygen is being received
Treatment for coronary heart disease when the heart is not permanently damaged
Stents
Statins
Bypass surgery
Treatment for coronary heart disease when the heart is permanently damaged
Heart transplant
Artificial hearts
Stent instalation process step 1
1) Entering through an artery in the groin, a narrow tube is pushed along the artery until it reaches the blocked artery. Thr tube has a camera, unextended stent and an uninflated balloon
Stent instalation process step 2/3
- The balloon is inflated, whichever extends the stent
- The balloon is then deflated and the tube and camera are removed
Stent instalation process step 3/3
The stent holds open the artery to allow more blood and oxygen to reach the heart muscle
Advantages of stents
Less risky procedure
Reduced recovery time
Disadvantage of stents
Risky operation
Artery could become blocked again
Bypass surgery
When a section of the vein is to bypass the part of the coronary artery that is blocked
Advantages of bypass surgery
Can be used on badly blocked artery
Disadvantage of bypass surgery
Expensive
General anesthetic is risky
Statins
Drugs used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease
