2.2.2 The Circulatory System Flashcards
Circulatory System
Type of transport system made up off the heart , blood and vessels
Transport system
A way of moving material around an organism in bulk
Types of circulatory system
Single hand double circulatory system
Single circulatory system
When blood passes through the heart once for every complete circuit
Double circulatory system
When blood passes through the heart twice for a complete circuit
Organism with single circulatory system
Fish
Organisms with double circulatory system
Mammals and birds
Parts of the double circulatory system
Systemic system
Pulmonary circuit
Systemic circuit
Carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body and back again
Pulmonary circuit
Carries blood from the heart to the lungs and then back again
Benefits of double circulatory system
-More efficient
-Blood can be sent off to different parts of the body at a high pressure -Oxygenated and deoxygenated blood don’t mix
Why won’t active animals, like humans, cope with a single circulatory system?
- Mammals have a much higher metablic rate, so they need oxygen delivered at a faster rate
- There is lower pressure blood to the tissues so oxygen wouldn’t be delivered to the cells fast enough
