2.2 what goes arond comes around Flashcards
into which 3 sections can the circulatory system be divided? how does blood flow through the circulatory system? which parts of the circulatory system are oxygenated and which are deoxygenated?
what’s the pulmonary circulation?
the blood flow from the heart to the lungs and back to the heart
what does the pulmonary circulation connect, by what?
connects the heart with the lungs by means of blood vessels which are called veins and arteries.
what do veins do?
carry blood towards the heart
what do arteries do?
carry blood away from the heart
how does blood become oxygenated\oxygen rich?
your blood takes up oxygen from your lungs
what’s the process happening when blood becomes oxygenated?
blood becomes oxygenated (takes up oxygen in the lungs)
your blood then transports the oxygen along your two pulmonary veins towards the heart
it enters the left atrium (the blood is now ready to transport the oxygen to your cells)
what happenes when the oxygen is delieverd to the cells of your body?
your blood becomes oxygen-poor\deoxygentaed.
what does the deoxygenated blood contain and what is it made by?
contains a lot of waist such as carbon dioxide. made by your cells.
what happenes when the heart recieves the blood?
the right ventricke pumps it away to your lungs along your two pulmonary arteries.
now the carbon dioxide can leave your body in the air you breath out.
what happenes at the same time?
the time the varbon dioxide is breathed out
your blood picks up new oxygen when you breath in. this freshly oxygenated blood enters the left atrium again.
for another round of circulation through your body.
ha
where is oxygenated blood transfered to and by what?
all of your other cells, tissues and organs by the systemic circulation
what does the circulatory system do?
except transfering oxygenated blood
transports waste substances from the cells back to your heart
through what is oxygenated blood pumped away from the heart to the cells?
generally & mainely
arteries. the main artery that transports blood directly away from the heart is callled the aorta.
how does the aorta “look” or “split” like?
it splits into smaller arteries
what is deoxygenated blood transported from the cells towards the heart through?
and what are the main ones
veins. the two main veins that transport blood directly from the organs back into the heart are called superior vena cava and the inferior vena cava.
where do the inferior vena cava and superior vena cava collect blood from?
smaller veins such as the liver vein and the renal veins
what is the heart made up of?
heart muscle (or cardiac muscle) which consists of heart muscle cells
what do the heart muscle cells need to survive and do they produce waste substances? what does it “cause” or “mean”?
they need oxygen and nutrients. and they do produce waste substances that have to be removed. Thus the blood has its own blood supply.
what’s the blood flow to and from the cardiac tissues called?
the coronary circulation
how is oxygen delieverd to cardiac tissues?
a small portion of oxygenated blood from the aorta flows into the coronary arteries to deliever oxygen to the cardiac tissues.
is blood in tge coronary veins oxygenated or not? and where does it flow to?
it is deoxygenated. flows bacl into the pulmonary artery.
