2.2 Water Flashcards
What is water’s structure?
2 Hydrogens bonded to 1 Oxygen. Oxygen slightly negative and hydrogen slightly positive. Hydrogen bonds between molecules.
Properties of water.
Adhesive, cohesive, high specific heat capacity and solvent properties.
Why is water cohesive?
They stick to each other because of the hydrogen bonding. This is good in the xylem.
Why is water adhesive?
Hydrogen bonds can form between the water and the other polar molecules.
Why does water have a high specific heat capacity?
The hydrogen bonds mean that it requires a lot of energy to overcome the forced in between the molecules.
Why is water a good coolant?
Evaporation has a cooling effect as considerable amounts of heat are needed to evaporate the water.
Hydrophilic.
Water loving.
Hydrophobic.
Water hating.
Why does methane have a lower boiling point?
No hydrogen bonding only London forces.
Why does it have high surface tension?
It is cohesive and so it resists low levels of external force which then makes it dense.
