2.2 specific heat capacity + REQUIRED PRACTICAL Flashcards
1
Q
what does the temperature rise of a substance when it is heated depend on
A
- amount of energy supplied to it
- mass of substance
- what the substance is
2
Q
specific heat capacity def
A
the energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kg of a substance by 1 degree
3
Q
specific heat capacity unit
A
J/kg degrees celsius
4
Q
Measuring specific heat capacity of aluminium required practical
A
- Check the mass of the aluminium block
- Wrap the insulation securely around the block and place it on an insulating mat
- With the power supply switched off, set up apparatus as shown in the diagram
- Check that the joulemeter is correctly connected to the heater and power supply
- Place the thermometer on the aluminium block and measure the temperature of the block and record it
- Switch the joulemeter on and record the starting reading
- Switch the power supply on
- When the reading on the thermometer reaches 15 degrees higher than the starting temperature, switch off the power supply
- Record joulemeter and thermometer reading
- Measure and record the highest reading of the thermometer after the heater was switched off

Q
Measuring specific heat capacity of water required practical
A
- Into a beaker, measure an amount of water than has the same mass as the aluminium block used
- Insulate the beaker by wrapping insulation around it
