2.2 Group 2 Flashcards
What are the properties of group 2 elements?
High melting points
Harder and higher density than group 1
Reactive metals with similar chemical reactions
What are the trends down group 2?
Atomic radius increases
FIE decreases
Melting point decreases
Reactivity increases
How does Magnesium react with:
Cold water
Steam
Effervescence
White flame + white solid MgO formed
How does Calcium react with:
Cold water
Effervescence + cloudy solution formed
How does Strontium react with:
Cold water
Effervescence + white solid
How does Barium react with:
Cold water
Effervescence + colourless solution
Reaction of Titanium oxide with chlorine and carbon
2C + TiO2 + 2Cl2 = TiCl4 + 2CO
Reduction to produce Titanium
TiCl4 + 2Mg = Ti + 2MgCl2
How does the solubilty and pH of group 2 hydroxide change down the group?
Increases
How does the solubilty of group 2 sulfates change down the group?
Decreases
Use of Barium salts?
Add 1cm3 of HCl to remove ions that might interfere
Add 1cm3 of BaCl2 - if SO4 2- ions present a percipitate of BaSO4 is present
Use of Magnseium salts?
Add 1cm3 of MgCl2 - if OH- ions present a white percipitate of Mg(OH)2 will be seen
Use of Calcium compounds?
Remove sulfur dioxide from flue gas
CaO + SO2 = CaSO3
CaCO3 + SO2 = CaSO3 + CO2
