1.3 Bonding Flashcards
Define ‘metallic bonding’
The attraction between delocalised outer shell electrons and positive metal ions in a lattice
Define ‘ionic bonding’
The electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions in a lattice
Define ‘covalent bonding’
A shared pair of electrons
Define ‘coordinate bonding’
A covalent bond in which both electrons of the shared pair come from the same atom
Describe ‘permanent dipol-dipole forces’
Occur between molecules which have a permanent dipole
Occur in addition to van der Waals
Occur between polar molecules
Stronger than VDW
Describe ‘giant metallic’
Strong electrostatic attraction between positive metal ions and delocalised electrons
Describe ‘giant ionic’
Strong electrostatic attraction between positive and negative ions
Describe ‘simple molecular’
Weak intermolecular forces between molecules
Describe ‘giant covalent’
Many strong covalent bonds between atoms
