What is Coir Geo Textile ?
Firstly Coir means any material made by using the top part of Coconuts (brown color naaru) . Now, if these are used to make textiles , its called Coir Geo Textile
Context ?
National Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (NRIDA) has announced that these coir geo textiles will be used for construction of roads under PM Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY- phase 3)
What are the new guidelines under PMGSY ?
1) 15% length of each road must be constructed using new technologies
2) Out of this 5% are to be constructed using IRC accredited technology (IRC - Indian Road Congress)
How is it related to Coir geo textiles ?
IRC has now accepted Coir geo textiles to be used for 5% of its road construction
Features of Coir Geo textile ?
1) It is a 100% natural fibre obtained from a renewable source - i.e coconut husk
2) It is naturally resistant to rot, molds and moisture and free from any microbial attack , hence needs no chemical treatment
3) Strong fabric with high durability
4) Protects land surface and promotes quick vegetation
5) Totally biodegradable also helps in soil stabilisation
6) Can absorb excess of solar radiation and dissipate energy of flowing water
