2.2 Flashcards
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules
What happens during osmosis?
In osmosis, water diffuses through a partially permeable membrane
What is a solute?
a solute is something that is dissolved in a solution
When does osmosis occur?
Osmosis occurs when water moves into and out of cells through the cell membrane
Where does osmosis occur?
It happens in our bodies and in the roots of plants
Describe the osmosis in detail.
The semi permeable membrane only allows the water molecules to pass through so the solute molecules cannot cross the membrane. The only way in which the concentration of solute molecules can become equal on both sides of the membrane is for water molecules to move.
What is does having a high water concentration mean?
An area with high water concentration will be an area with a low concentration of solute. This will be referred to as a dilute solution.
What is turgor pressure?
When a plant cell that is placed into pure water or a dilute solution will take in water and begin to swell.
Why does a cell become turgid?
The strong cell wall prevents the plant cell from bursting as it swells
Why will a plant cell placed in a concentrated solution lose water?
A plant cell that is placed in a concentrated solution will lose water by osmosis, because the water concentration inside the cell is greater than the water concentration outside the cell.
What happens when a solution is too concentrated?
The cytoplasm may shrink so much that the cell membrane is pulled away from the cell wall. This is known as plasmolysis and will probably cause the death of the plant cell.
