2.1.5 - redox Flashcards
1
Q
what are the 3 general rules of oxidation
A
- all elements in their natural state have an oxidation number of 0
- the sum of the oxidation numbers of the components in an ion add to the charge of the ion — INCLUDING POLYATOMIC IONS (treat as one atom)
- the sum of oxidation numbers in any atom add to 0
2
Q
what are the 5 oxidation rules that follow a certain order
A
- ox number of groups 1, 2, and 3* are ALWAYS +1, +2, and +3
- ox number of fluorine is ALWAYS -1
- ox number of hydrogen is USUALLY -1
- ox number of oxygen is USUALLY -2
- ox number of chlorine is USUALLY -1
*group 3 as in group 13 - NOT transition metals!
