2.1 The particle zoo Flashcards
What are cosmic rays?
» High energy particles that travel through space from the starts including the sun
What happens when cosmic rays enter the earth’s atmosphere?
» Create new short-lived particles and antiparticles
What is a muon?
» A heavy electron which is negatively charged
» Has a rest mass over 200 times the rest mass of an electron
What is a pion?
» Pie meson which is positively charged, neutral, or negatively charged
What is a kaon?
» K meson can be negative, neutral or positvely charged
How are kaons produced?
» Produced in 2s through the strong interaction
Why are kaons known as strange particles?
» Decay took longer than expected
» Included pions as the products
Why must kaons decay via the weak interaction?
» As the quark flavour changes, the quark flavour cannot change in strong interaction
What can kaons decay into?
» Pions
» Muons
» Antineutrino
What can a pion decay into?
» Muon, an antineutrino
» Antimuon and neutrino
What can pion +0 decay into?
» High - energy photons
What can Muons decay into?
» Electron and antineutrino
What can an antimuon decay into?
» Positron and a neutrino
