2.1 Normal Growth and Endocrine Control Flashcards
What is growth dependent on and what controls it??
Cellular hyperplasia, cellular hypertrophy and apoptosis
Controlled by the interactions of genes, the environment, nutrition, internal signalling pathways
What anthropometric assessment will you see in underweight and what does it reflect?
Decreased weight for age and reflects both acute and chronic malnutrition
What anthropometric assessment will you see in stunting and what does it reflect?
Decreased height for age and this reflects chronic malnutrition
What anthropometric assessment will you see in wasting and what does it reflect?
Decreased weight for height, reflects acute malnutrition
What is the mid parental height for boys and girls?
BOYS: (maternal +12.5) + paternal / 2
GIRLS: Maternal + (paternal -12.5) /2
What are the requirements for normal growth?
Absence of chronic disease
Emotional stability and secure family environment
Adequate nutrition
Normal hormonal regulation
Absence of defects impairing normal cellular or bone growth
