1.3 The Adrenal Glad Flashcards
Where are the adrenals located?
Behind the peritoneum, above and in front of the upper poles of the kidney
What is the embryological origin of the adrenals
90% mesoderm - cortex
10% ectoderm - becomes the medulla
What is the blood supply of the adrenals?
Comes directly from the abdominal aorta
What are the tree layers of the cortex of the adrenal?
Zona glomerulosa
Zona fasiculata
Zona reticularis
What hormones are produced from the cortex?
Aldosterone, cortisol and androgens
What hormones are produced from the medulla?
Adrenaline, noradrenaline and dopamine
What does the zona glomerulosa secrete?
Mineralocorticoids (aldsoterone)
What does the zona fasiculate secrete?
Gucocorticoids (cortisol)
What does the zona retucularis secrete?
Androgens (DHEA)
What is the pharmacological analogue of cortisol?
Prednisolone
What do you get with an excess of glucocorticoid?
Cushings
What do you get with a deficiency of glucocorticoid?
Addisons
What do you get when there is an excess of mineralocorticoids?
Conn’s syndrome
What happens in cushings syndrome?
Increased production of ACTH from primary adrenal pathology
