2.1 Intro to Populations Flashcards
Definition of Population
All of the organisms in the same place at the same time that can reproduce together
Difference between Density and Distribution
Density is how many organisms are in the area while distribution is how they are spread out.
Which type of distribution works best for random sampling?
Uniform
The population has scarce resources, what is their distribution most likely?
Uniform
The population has many resources all spread out, what is their distribution most likely?
Random
The population has resources in certain areas, what is their distribution most likely?
Clumped
Find the density: Each square is only 1m x 1m and the total area is 10. You are given 3, 6, 4, 2 and 5.
40
There are 100 trees in a 5 mi^2 area, what is the density?
20 trees/mi
You have marked 10 flies. Later you capture another 10 to find only 2 of them marked. What is the estimated population?
50 flies.
Tigers are very territorial, what would their density and distribution be.
Their density would be low because of how spread out they are and their distribution would be uniform.
