3.1 Community Ecology Flashcards
Definition of Niche
Biotic and abiotc resources that a species uses: Where, What, When, and How
Realized niche vs. Fundamental niche
Realized is the actual Niche and Fundamental is the possible Niche
Definition of Mutualism
Both organisms help each other
Definition of Commensalism
One organism is getting help and nothing happens to the other
Definition of Parasitism
One organism lives off of the other and it harms the other
Definition of Predation
One organisms eats another, generally animals
Definition of Herbivory
One organism eats the other, generally a plant
Facultative vs. Obligatory
Facultative they can survive on their own, Obligatory, they need each other to survive.
What is likely to happen if the niches of two species overlap a little vs. a lot
If it is a little there may be little to no change in the organisms niches while for a lot there will most likely be some major changes in their niches
How can niche partitioning increase the biodiversity of a community
If the organisms are thriving more then there will be more species. This partitioning can happen by separating via time, area, food source, and more.
