Reasons to have community participation:
A
- To involve citizens in planning and design decision making processes
- To provide citizens with a voice in planning and decision making in order to improve plans, decisions, service delivery, and overall quality of the environment
- To promote a sense of community to all have a common goal

Four essential characteristics of participation:
A
- Participation is inherently good
- It is a source of wisdom and info about local conditions, needs, and attitudes and thus improves the effectiveness of decision making
- It is an inclusive and pluralistic approach by which fundamental human needs are fulfilled and user values reflected
- It is a means of defending the interests of groups and not ignored for the interests of large organizations and bureaucracies
