2021 hazards Flashcards

Q

Assess the usefulness of Figures 9a–9d in presenting information 6
on volcanic eruptions.

part 1

A

The first graph is useful in that it provides an overview of the countries which experience deadly volcanoes.

However, it is not possible to see specifically where these occur or when they occurred.

Also, the scale uses a gradation of the colour green but on the map it is only possible to ascertain perhaps 5 colours and practically impossible to identify the number of deaths.

Perhaps its only use is that it does given some sense of the relative impact on loss of life by place.

Q

the the third piece of data

A

The third resource presents two pieces of information and this is more useful. There appears to be a loose correlation between VEI and frequency. VEIs tend to be more explosive where volcanoes are more frequent.

Q

To what extent does plate tectonic theory help in understanding the 20
development of landforms associated with plate movement?
conclusion.

A

In terms of the question expect to see most view plate tectonic theory as providing a secure link to process and landform, with further development and support provided by gravitational sliding and hot spots.

Q

explain convection currents

A

mantle hottest tot the core warmest magma rises as it rises to the top it starts to cool
the circular movement of magma creates drag causing them to moves

Q

explain slab pull

A

at destructive plate boundaries denser crust is forced under less dense crust
The sinking pulls the plate edge pulls the rest of the plate towards a plate boundaries.

Q

explain ridge push or grational sliding

A

at constructive plate boundaries , magma rises to the surface and forms new crust which is very hot.
This hot magma causes other rocks to expand and the density of it creates a slope.
As the new crust cools this material moves down slope putting pressure won the plate margins to move apart

Q

explain sea floor spreading

A

as tetchontic plates move apart , magma rises and to fills a gap and then cools to form new crust.
Meaning the sea floor gets slightly wider
called mid ocean ridges.

Q

The paffic ring of fire us another piece of evecidnet for this

A

In terms of vulcanicity the same theories can be used to account for island arcs such as Japan or the Kermadec Arc may feature. The Pacific Ring of Fire may also feature.

9
Q

how does an island arc form

A

1) magma plume of extra hot lava rises up from mNRLW
2)volcanos form above magma plumes
£) As the plate about it moves the magma creates a new volcano.
3)the old area because less volcano
4) As this start to occur

Q

what happens when two oceanic plates come together

A

as they move together the dense one will be subductected causing a deep sea trencnch.
Also this starts volcanic eruptions to occur which erupt underwater to form island arcs.

what is the other evidence that we seeing this arise 9 Werner.

A

the jigsaw fit , similar fossils being found in the area and relating magnetic patterns all point towards.

Q

Explain how an oceanic ridge forms

A

underwater volcanoes erput along ocean ridges and can build up to sea level for example Iceland has been formed by this.

Q

Global governance questions - overall thought

A

climate change is making them occur more often so any action to see that will limit fire trees.
However to reduce the impact you need to see local and national policy

Facts about Australia

A

173 people killed

4 billion worth of damage

and the government had to change its forest management strategy

removing all eucltipeis trees as its incredibly flammable

and banning fire works in forests
