Emergency Requirements response for sexual assault situations
1) Make contact with victim - Safety/Medical
2) Evaluate scene
3) Notify Patrol Supervisor
4) Secure crime scene
5) Ask if victim report crime to anyone else
6) Search for Suspect
7) Limit questions
Preliminary Victim Interview Procedures
1) Establish if crime occurred
2) Response: Crime/Witnesses/suspects/evidence / crime scene
3) under 16: Speak to parents. Only SAU detective and The Suffolks District Attorneys office will conduct in-depth interview with child victims
When do you collect evidence from a sexual assault Crime Scene
If there is an emergency | Inclement Weather - evidence might be lost or destroyed
What crimes are to be investigated by district Detectives
1) Indecent Exposure
2) Open and Gross Lewd
3) Sexual harassment
What if probable cause exist to effect and arrest
Do not wait for SAU detectives - Effect the arrest
Operations shall notify on-call SAU detectives via pager between what hours
1:00AM and 7:30AM.
What happens if a situation occurs in the city but is elsewhere out of the city
1) Do not dispatch Uniformed officers
2) SAU Detectives will respond to complete incident report.
What happens if an indecent assault and battery takes place in the city but person is out of the city
1) SAU detectives will generally not respond
2) They will still complete the incident report
Who collects rape-kits at the hospital
SAU Detectives only - Enter into Evidence Management
Who conducts interrogations of sexual assault suspects
SAU detectives
If excited utterance is made, officer will complete a form 26
What if officer is made aware of a sexual assault suspect
Contact SAU detectives to complete interview of suspect
What if suspect of sexual assault is a Boston Police Officer
1) Contact SAU
2) SAU contacts Operations
3) Operations contacts BPS
If allowed, photographs of victims of injuries should be taken how soon
24, 48, 72 - In the event injuries become more visible and pronounced
Upon notification by court, supervising officer, sworn member of violations of of sexual assault laws
BPS to send notification to POST and OPAT
