When do we frame the ceiling?
After all walls are up and braced straight
2 purposes to ceiling framing
1) tie exterior walls together
2) resist outward pressure exerted by roof rafters
Do ceiling joists rest on cap plates?
Yes
How are ceiling joists attached?
2 toenails into cap plate, 3 face nails into rafter
How are butted joists tied?
Metal cleat
How are lapped joist exterior wall ends spaced?
One on each side of the layout line to stay parallel
Why is there a block between my ceiling joists?
Maintain roof rafters meeting at the same point, it sits “between” the joists
Why can’t I keep my joist exterior end square?
Have to cut an angle to match the roof slope so it doesn’t poke out past sheathing
What do I need in order to keep my ceiling joists ends square at both ends?
Need a plate on top of the ceiling joist; allows for thicker insulation in that space
What are the short joists at the end of a hip roof for?
Keep ceiling joists out of the way of hip rafters coming down to corners
Can my attic access be TWO joist spaces wide?
Yes, need a header
Can my attic access be THREE joists spaces wide?
Yea, need to double up joists on both sides for support
Why are my ceiling joists wobbly and leaning over?
Didn’t install ribbon or strong backs (strapping)
My interior wall parallel to my joists is easy to wobble back and forth?
Need blocking between joists to attach wall to
What size nails do I use to attach joists to wall?
82mm (3-1/4”)
