2019 MAY (done in class FW) Flashcards
Outline two possible land use changes that could account for the increase in river discharge over time (2+2)
- urbanisation
- results in more impermeable surfaces and less infiltration
- deforestation
- results in less interception and more surface run off
explain how different channel modifications can
i) increase flood risk
ii) help with flood mitigation
i) channel straightening allows faster removal of an increased amount of water away from that area
- increasing flood risk downstream
ii) constructing artificial levees, gives the river more channel capacity so more discharge without flooding
explain one reason why the median age of a population could decrease (2)
- immigration of youthful economic migrants
- means proportionately there are more younger people
- reducing median age
explain one environmental consequence of one named forced migration (3)
- Lebanon has many syrian refugees escaping war
- the waste from informal settlements gets dumped in an uncontrolled manner
- causes soil and water pollution
explain one policy designed to prevent human trafficking (3)
- UN protocol against trafficking
- helped increase criminalisation of trafficking in countries that previously had no specific laws against it
- punishments like fines and prison are given to those convicted
using evidence from the population pyramid explain challenges faced by the US government in resettling syrian refugees (2)
- challenges for education
- 33.8% between ages 5-17
to what extent does the infographic offer a flawed representation of the scale of syrian resettlement in US (6)
- infographic has some strengths but mainly demonstrates flaws
FLAWS:
- only uses officially recorded statistics
- doesn’t take into account the illegal immigrants
STRENGTHS:
- shows the actual numbers going into the US
- can be compared with the number of syrians displaced
- demonstrating that refugee numbers proportionately are quite small
