20 Flashcards
what is the fluid that runs through the lymphatic vessels
fluid that does not circulate back into the blood from the interstitial fluid
what are the 3 parts of the lymphatic vessels
network of lymphatic vessels
lymph (fluid)
Lymph nodes (filter and cleanse lymph)
what is the pathway of lymph in the lymphatic system
lymphatic capillaries lymphatic vessels lymph node lymphatic trunk duct back into blood
what are the mechanisms used to move lymph throughout the system
skeletal muscle compressions, pressure changes, valves prevent back flow
what do lymphocytes mature into and what are their functions
t cells - manage immune response
b cells - produce plasma cells that secrete antibodies
what are the 3 types of lymphoid cells
macrophages - phagocytes, activate t cells
dendritic cells - activate t cells
reticular cells - produce gibers that make up the stroma
what are the 2 types of lymphoid tissues
diffuse LT
lymphoid follicles -
what is the function of lymph nodes
acts as a filter to remove and destroy micro-organisms and other debris from the lymph
what vessels does lymph use to enter and exit the lymph node
afferent
efferent
why are there more efferent vessels than afferent
to allow for a sligh back up which gives lymphocytes and macrophages time to perform their functions
what are buboes
inflamed swollen tender lymph nodes that result when nodes are overwhelmed by what they are trying to destroy
can become cancerous
what is the largest lymphoid organ
spleen
what is the spleen’s function
remove old and defective rbcs and platelets as well as foreign matter and debris from the blood
provides a site for lymphocyte proliferation and immune survalence
what is in the red pul of the spleen? how about the white?
white - lymphocytes
red - macrophages
what are the structures involved in malt
appendix follicles
tonsils
peyer’s patches
