2. Two sides Flashcards
lateralization
refers to how cognitive processes (neural functions) are more dominant on one side of the brain than the other.
functions of left hemisphere of brain
- controls right side of body
- logic tasks (the big picture)
- science and mathematics
- large muscle movements like walking
- balance
- nonverbal communication
- smell
- sound
- taste
regulating avoidance behaviors - involuntary bodily functions
functions of right hemisphere of brain
- controls left side of body
- creativity and arts
- ## comprehending emotional stimuli (damage can cause one to not get sarcasm or humor)
what is in both sides of the brain
- the limbic system (includes amygdala and hippocampus)
- responsible for emotions and memory
- facial muscles
- taste
what are the three theories of the evolution of cerebral lateralization?
analytic-synthetic theory
motor theory
linguistic theory
analytic-synthetic theory
posits the idea that there are two modes of thinking, the synthetic and the analytic, which have become separated through evolution into specialized activities located in the right brain and left brain respectively.
Left hemisphere - logical and analysis and details
Right hemisphere - synthesis, processing information and overall patterns
Limitation - very vague and limited to a degree (hard to empirically test)
Example - driving = holistic view from right hemisphere but left hemisphere has detailed view for safety if something goes wrong
motor theory
left hemisphere is specialized specifically more for the control of fine movements and not for the control of speech, although speech is only one of many category controlled by the left hemisphere.
linguistic theory
major role of the left hemisphere is language because of the left hemisphere’s crucial specialization for analytic thought and skilled motor activity.
difference between split brain and brain lateralization?
split brain: brain function independent than other
lateralization: dominant function on hemispheres
split brain
Each hemisphere functions independently with some connections to each other but not the full connections
brain lateralization
Lateralization of the brain hemispheres refers to a functional dominance of one hemisphere over the other, in which one is more responsible or entirely responsible for control of a function in comparison to the other.
callosotomy
corpus callosum is cut through in an effort to limit the spread of epileptic activity between the two halves of the brain.
corpus callosum
brain hemispheres mirror each other but need each other to function
ex: typing with both hands, brain gotta know what key each hand pressed so together they form a word
effects/consequences of callosotomy
- Still function normally but difficulty to learn new motor tasks
- Hemispheres act like two different brains so different tasks with each hand can be done simultaneously
- Simple/fast tasks can be more efficient because 2 independent searches/functioning,
- but harder tasks are much harder
gazzaniga
Epileptic split brain outcomes:
- Right and left side of a screen showed images
- Right side could see but left side could not see
- If two images on both sides - could draw images from both sides even if reported not seeing the left side
- can see left side but no connection to left hemisphere to be able to say what he saw
