How successful was Richard III's reign 1483-85?
How did Richard III deal with law and order, specifically Buckingham’s Rebelllion?
Richard crushed Buckingham’s Rebellion in 1483 that was in support of Henry Tudor. Over one hundred people were attainted. The rebellion was supported by former members of Edward IV’s household after Henry Tudor promised to marry Elizabeth of York. Richard travelled the country visiting areas that witnessed lawlessness.
What did Richard do that was unpopular with Southerners?
He introduced Northerners who he could trust into the South after Buckingham’s Rebellion. This was very unpopular with Southerners.
How did Richard III deal with the North?
Richard introduced a Council of the North, nominally under his son, it was like the Council of Wales that Edward had introduced.
How did Richard III fail with financial management?
The Scottish war proved to be expensive, Richard did not want to call for a tax. He attempted to exploit all sources of income but was reduced to demanding forced loans.
What were the aims of Richard’s foreign policy?
Primary aim was to prevent foreign support to Henry Tudor.
He also wanted to support the Duke of Albany’s attempts on the Scottish throne.
How successful was Richard III’s foreign policy?
- Albany’s raids were futile and Richard signed a three year truce with Scotland in 1484.
- Richard tried to get Brittany to hand Henry Tudor over, but he escaped to France.
The Tudor army that invaded England had French support, but also Bretons and Scots, underlying the failure of Richard’s foreign policy.
What was Richard’s approach towards justice?
Richard III showed a genuine interest in justice. He established an early form of legal aid.
